So, you’re blessed with bouncy, coily curls but you’re just wishing you had straight, manageable hair. But what if we were to tell you, you could have curls and embrace them too?
Curls are beautiful but taking care of them is quite another feat. Having curls can be frustrating, frizzy, and let’s not even mention mornings! Thankfully, with these five easy steps you can learn how to take care of your curls naturally without a) breaking the bank or b) losing your wits.
Find out how to take care of your curls naturally with these simple (and natural) tips.
1. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize
The trick to keeping curly hair strong and silky is to moisturize. Because curly hair is indeed so coily, it can be very fragile and therefore damages easily. Moisturizing your hair as often as possible enhances your chances of maintaining delicate locks.
2. Don’t Skip the Pre-Shampoo Routine
Pre-shampooing curly hair is a must, even if it is an additional step in your hair care routine. The effort you put into your pre-shampoo will save you lots of time from detangling post-shampoo.
Applying conditioning oils or natural oils before you shower is the perfect way to prevent tangles and damages during the shampoo process.
3. Say No to Over-Shampooing
A common but dangerous mistake to make is to shampoo curly hair everyday. In reality, curly hair doesn’t need to be washed and cleansed daily, so save your hair and your time and say no to shampoo.
Curly hair is delicate, so avoid over-shampooing at all costs. If you do need to freshen up your hair, use only conditioner while in the shower. Conditioner, unlike shampoo, softens and moisturizes without harshly cleansing. Your curls will be much more manageable and will be ready to be styled once you step out of the shower.
4. Avoid Heat!
If you want to keep your curls defined and smooth, then you must avoid heat at all costs. This goes for hot showers, too! Hot water invites frizz, whereas cold water closes cuticles and traps in moisture.
And yes, avoiding heat also means no hot appliances like blow dryers. It’s much better for your curls if you air dry with a microfiber towel (avoid scratchy towels). To keep curls soft and defined overnight, try wrapping your hair in a silky scarf and make sure to sleep on a silky pillow.
5. Comb Curls
A rule of thumb when you have crazy curls is to not brush, but comb. Combing curls is best when hair is wet, sectioned, and lathered with an after conditioner. Wide-tooth combs will be your best friend, as long as they are of high quality. Forget brushing once your hair is dry, as this will only create a frizzy mess!
Follow and repeat these five simple steps for beautifully defined curls that don’t frizz or break. Taking care of your curls has never been so easy! Just remember to moisturize everyday. Your curls will thank you for it!
